Retail sees 4.4% growth in first quarter

Ljubljana, 29 April (STA) - Turnover in retail trade increased by 4.4% in the first quarter of the year over the same period last year. In March, it was up by 24% year-on-year, as most shops were closed in March 2020, and in retail trade with non-food products it increased by 50%, the Statistics Office said on Thursday.


In retail trade with non-food products the turnover was 11% higher and with food it was up by 5.4%. The turnover in automotive fuel retail decreased by 9.2%.

After surging in February, retail trade turnover continued to rise in March. It rose by 3.4% in monthly comparison, with the highest growth at the monthly level being recorded in automotive fuel (by 3.6%).

In retail trade with non-food products the turnover was up by 1.1%, and with food products it was flat.

Compared to March 2020, the turnover in retail trade increased by 24.0%. "In March 2020, most stores were closed for half a month due to the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic," the Statistics Office noted.

The turnover in retail trade with non-food products was up 50% in March compared to the same month last year. In retail trade with automotive fuel it was 15.2% higher and in retail trade with food 3.8% higher.
