Branch Development

Textile, clothing and leather processing industry have a long tradition on the Slovenian soil. Organised manufacture of products goes back to the previous century, but it was only after World War II that industrial development got into full swing. In this period, investments into jobs, particularly in the clothing and footwear section, were relatively low, which led to the creation of more new jobs.

This industry was among the first to set out to foreign markets. Its contribution and participation in the development of other industries were significant and positive.

Since the independence of Slovenia, the size of this industry has been shrinking - the number of jobs has been cut down to one half and the volume of output has dropped by more than one third. Nevertheless, the share of exports has increased so that two thirds of the total income is earned in foreign markets. Regardless of the reduced size of textile, clothing and leather processing industry, the branch has retained one sixth of all jobs in processing activities and employs mainly women's workforce, with their share exceeding 70 percent.
