Development Group for environment and construction

Characteristics of the particular area in terms of its development potential

Construction is the industry that across the Member States of the European Union generates 10% of GDP and employs 7% of total work force. The construction business has been facing ever-increasing environmental challenges, since it uses 40% of all natural resources, generates 40% of all waste, and contributes to 40% of the CO2 emission. Its impact on energy management and its consumption is substantial. As much as 25% of overall manufacturing output arises from civil engineering and building.

Areas identified as having development potential

  • Impact of economic activities on the natural environment
  • Rational consumption of energy in civil engineering and construction activities
  • Impact of the natural environment on the man-made environment
  • Technologies based on advanced materials
